Selma Lomax, a student journalist at Cuttington University, was suspended for writing an allegedly defamatory article which criticized the university’s management. The focus of the article was university funding and problems arising from a lack of resources.

University administrators claimed that, by writing the article, Mr. Lomax had violated the university handbook, which prohibits students from writing defamatory publications. In an official letter the university found Lomax "guilty of a major offense" for using his "profession in journalism to obliterate the good image of the institution."
