On May 2, 2013 Professor Khalil Alio, former Rector of the University of N’Djaména, was arrested in his office, at the same time as numerous other arrests of journalists and officials accused of attempting to destabilize the country, and prepare a possible putsch.  Professor Alio was reportedly arrested because his name appeared on a list held by a former armed opposition leader who was also detained.  Professor Alio was released on bail on May 8.

Scholars at Risk is concerned about arbitrary imprisonment of a scholar. In addition to the harm to the immediate victim, such incidents have a chilling effect on academic freedom and undermine democratic society generally. State authorities have a responsibility to refrain from arbitrary arrests and prosecution of scholars for exercising their internationally recognized rights, including free expression and association.
