On April 27, 2016, Sudanese security forces reportedly shot and killed Mohammed Al Sadiq, a 20-year old student at Ombdurman Ahlia University, just outside the campus gates.
Al Sadiq was participating in an on-campus forum to discuss a violent attack against another student, Badawi Suleiman, allegedly perpetrated the prior week by students affiliated with the country's ruling party. Suleiman and Al Sadiq were both members of the Nuba Mountains Student Union. Pro-government students and security officers reportedly entered and interrupted the forum, forced the participants off campus, and then shot Al Sadiq in the chest.
Scholars at Risk is concerned about violent attacks, including the apparently targeted killing, of university students. In addition to the harm to the immediate victims, such incidents have a chilling effect on academic freedom and freedom of expression. State authorities have a responsibility to ensure the security of academic communities, to prevent future attacks, and to hold perpetrators of violent attacks accountable.
