On February 20, 2018, a group of individuals believed to be dismissed students from the Lagos State Polytechnic University (LASPOTECH), Ikorodu Campus, entered a student orientation with weapons, and demanded money and valuables from the students, sparking an altercation with security officials which left one of the attackers dead, and several others wounded.

Media sources have described the gang of attackers as members of a cult. One of the alleged former students was wielding an axe; when security officials attempted to take him into custody, he resisted, and they reportedly shot him in the leg.  He later died in the hospital.  Sources have indicated that the incident raised tensions on campus, sparking fears of a reprisal by members of the gang. At least one further attempt by members of the gang to enter campus has been reported.

Scholars at Risk is concerned about violence on campus. In addition to the harm to the immediate victims, such incidents may contribute to a climate of fear in the students’ higher education community. State authorities have a responsibility to ensure the security of higher education communities, to prevent future attacks, and to hold perpetrators of violent attacks accountable.
